Jamshedpur: The villagers of Matigora panchayat stopped road construction work being carried out by Pushpanjali Construction under Mosabani block of East Singhbhum on Tuesday. They accused the contracting agency of using sub-standard materials to construct the road in the deep forests of Matigora.

Led by the Mukhiya of Matigora, Kartik Hembram, the villagers refused to allow the workers to go ahead with the construction work despite requests by the agency officials. They alleged that the agency was merely blackening the kutcha road without following the standard procedure of construction. Coal tar is being used to cover the pitch road to cover up sub-standard quality of work, they said.

The Mukhiya said the government should first get the construction work probed before ordering it to proceed. They said the road would not tolerate the pressure of traffic with the quality of work being carried out by the agency.

Among those who opposed the construction included Raju Singh, Sonaram Hembram, Dhanu Ram Kisku, Ganesh Mahapatro and Dashrath Mardi.
