TB Champion Tupeshwari Devi from Giridh in Jharkhand focuses on raising awareness on TB in her panchayat. Through November and December 2018, Tupeshwari has added a total of 20 new members to TB Elimination from Jharkhand (TEJ), a network of TB survivors and Champions formed following a capacity-building workshop for TB survivors organised by REACH in January 2017.
On December 9, Tupeshwari organised a meeting in Nimiaghat in which the Member of Parliament from Phusro in Giridih District, Shri Ravindra Pandey, and nearly 200 women participated. The meeting discussed TB prevention, care and support through the collective efforts of all stakeholders.
On December 10, she organised a meeting at Nagar Panchayat Bhavan in which nearly 50 women from SHGs were present. Tupeshwari discussed the basics of TB and steps necessary for making the village TB-free. Sputum samples of three people who had TB symptoms were collected and sent for testing. Two of them were diagnosed with TB.
On December 11, Tupeshwari organised a meeting in Gutgali in which nearly 40 women from 15 nearby villages attended. On December 20, she organised a TB orientation meeting at Nimiaghat and 11 TB survivors attended.
“It is important to create awareness on TB among women. They can create a positive impact on the family and the community,” Tupeshwari said.
