Maoists abduct four on R-Day eve, driver released

Ranchi: One jawan was killed while 16 others were severely injured in a Maoist attack on a combing party in Pirtand police station area of Giridih on Monday, sources said.

State police officials said the police party was attacked when it had gone deep into the den of the Maoists in a bid to search for the four persons abducted by the rebels in the evening of 25th January last.

Those victims, identified as a student of Saivardhan Bakshi of PMDRF, New Delhi, a panchayat gram rojgar sevak Shambhu Pandey, panchayat sevak Maksood Alam and another Jan Sevak, were taken hostage by armed rebels.

One of them, a vehicle driver, Rajendra Yadav, was released later by the Maoists.

The combing party comprising jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar and the Central Reserve Police Force were taken aback when landmines went off near Dolkata forest.

Four Jharkhand Jaguar jawans and 12 CRPF jawans were injured in the incident. The jawans however soon retaliated and opened counter fire in a bid to disperse the firing rebels.

Sources said not much information was available regarding the encounter of the paramilitary forces with the Maoists as yet.

They said the forces were trapped by the Naxalites on their way towards the forest while searching for the abducted persons.

After exploding the landmines, the rebels also reportedly opened indiscriminate firing at
the paramilitary forces, thereby leading them to take defensive measures to avoid casualty.

In a bid to ensure safe release of those abducted, the director general of police, Jharkhand, Rajiv Kumar, had also reached Giridih.

The DGP himself monitored the police operation aimed at pressurizing the rebels and ensuring release of the victims.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren earlier convened a high-level meeting with the senior authorities of the state administration yesterday after coming to know of the abduction.

He convened Chief Secretary RS Sharma, Home Secretary NN Pandey and the DGP at his residence and directed them to ensure release of the victims.

Sources said the victims were abducted after they had set out from Nokania village in Tuiyo panchayat of Pirtand on Saturday last.

A camp was organized in the said village for disposing cases related to old age pension, widow pension and other social security pension applications.

The victims could not be contacted after they set out around 4.30 pm, sources said.
