Some politicians and journalists were beaten up by Ranchi police after some candidates and their supporters complained of tampering with the electronic voting machines.

The incident happened Thursday night when reports of EVMs being allegedly tampered with in Ranchi spread like wildfire. The political parties came to know about it and promptly informed the district administration.

The BJP, JVM-P candidates and Trinamool Congress candidate Bandhu Tirkey reached the spot with their supporters. The BJP leader CP Singh said he had not witnessed such brutality of police in the last 50 years. Party candidate Ram Tahal Choudhary alleged that the transfer of several police station officers in-charge just before elections smacked of a conspiracy on part of the district administration.

A police version said the supporters of various parties misbehaved with the woman officer who was in-charge of the EVMs and lathicharge was ordered to disperse the mobs and control the situation.

The candidates of the BJP, JVM-P and TMC and journalists covering the incident were all allegedly beaten up.
