Ranchi: All Jharkhand Students Union leader and former state pollution board chairman Tileshwar Sahu was gunned down by an assailant during a Women’s Day function at Barhi in Hazaribagh on Saturday.

The broad day light incident happened when a man fired on Sahu when the latter was talking to several women during the function organized by AJSU. Sahu succumbed to three shots on his way to hospital. Cops suspect the hand of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) rebels in the assassination.

AJSU activists nabbed a youth, identified as Suraj, suspecting him to be the killer and handed him over to police after thrashing him severely. Cops said they will be interrogating the youth after his treatment to get clues into the incident.

Sahu, who was preparing to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Chatra apart from eyeing the Barhi Assembly seat, faced threats from Naxalite organizations including the PLFI. His paternal house was blown up earlier by the Naxalites. Several members of his family were also attacked in the past.

Investigators look at the incident as a consequence of earlier incidents of attack on Sahu and his kin. They said Sahu was shot three bullets from close range by the shooter who suddenly took out a gun and opened fire from the middle of the mob. Sahu was busy conversing with a few women participants of the programme.

In view of the shocking incident, the proposed meeting of AJSU’s Parliamentary Board has been postponed till further notice.

Many AJSU leaders and kin of Tileshwar Sahu reached the Sadar Hospital on coming to know of the incident. AJSU leaders have called for bandh tomorrow in protest of the murder. Party activists and supporters blocked the National Highway near Barhi for several hours after the incident. They demanded arresting of Sahu’s killers.

Sources said another senior AJSU leader Loknath Mahato had also reached the women’s conference destination along with Sahu.
