Police scan CCTV footage to identify criminals

Jamshedpur, Sept. 25: In a shocking incident, two bike-borne criminals shot and injured a youth who tried to stop them from snatching a gold chain from an  elderly woman in Sonari police station area on Friday morning.

The victim identified as Kalicharan Sahu, who is a resident of Sonari sustained a bullet in his right leg while saving the victim from snatching the chain.

The incident took place near Sonari Gurudwara at about 7 am.  As Kalicharan (28) was shot he fell down, some locals rushed him to MGM Medical College Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.  

According to information, the two bike-borne criminals had stopped in front of an elderly couple who were returning home in Sonari from morning walk.  Soon after, one of the criminals tried to snatch the gold chain from the old woman’s neck .  As Kalicharan saw the attempt, he tried to save the elderly woman from the snatchers.   One of the criminals fished out a pistol and fired at his leg.

After firing, the criminals sped away toward Kagalnagar market area. Soon after the incident, a police party arrived at the scene.  The OC, Sonari police station Renu Gupta started the incident at the scene of firing and subsequently went over to MGM Medical College Hospital for taking a statement from the victim.

City SP, Subhash Chandra Jat who was leading the investigation of the incident said that due to the attempted snatching and the firing incident took place at Sonari.

” We have started an investigation. An incident of firing took place near Gurudwara in Sonari. We are confident of detecting the case soon,” said Jat.

The  City SP said that they are scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed at the Gurudwara and also adjoining buildings for getting the identity of the criminals who shot at the youth while trying to commit snatching.

A crime wave has gripped the city in recent months with figures showing a substantial increase in the number of attacks, thefts and loot taking place across the city. While the deteriorating law and order situation in the city remains a major concern,  the police personnel are busy in cooperating with the district administration in fighting against the spread of Coronavirus. Criminals were on a shooting spree in and around the steel city on Saturday night.

“The city had been free from crimes, but now the `knife culture’ has taken roots. The police should act with utmost vigil and nab the accused.  The increase in crimes is a matter of concern. Thefts were a common but recent rise of cases of murders is serious,” said a district official.
