Jamshedpur: In yet another session of the XLRI leadership series, the students got an opportunity to interact with Debarati Sen, Managing Director, 3M India Limited and 3M Lanka Pvt. Ltd.
She addressed the students on the topic “Leadership in times of Uncertainty”, something very apt in the current scenario where we stay in a VUCA (volatile- Uncertain- Complex- Ambiguous) world which requires the leaders to always have a plan C to mitigate uncertainties. An inspiration for women leaders, Ms. Sen talked about her experiences as she climbed the corporate ladder.
She stressed on the importance of ethics and integrity in the corporate world for sustained business growth. This is one thing which is uncompromisable.
Being the first woman Asian leader in various areas in her company, Ms. Sen stressed upon Transcultural leadership in building relationship on common elements across boundaries while maintaining one’s own cultural identity. She shared the insights behind 3M’s success globally and how the company has grown keeping customer at its helm of affairs. The realization that “Innovation is chased by commoditization”, has constantly motivated 3M to innovate using science for betterment of mankind.
Being an Alum of 92’ batch of XLRI, Ms. Debarati acknowledged XLRI’s role in shaping her to be the businesswoman she is. She was excited to be back in Campus and interact with Professors and students. It was a great opportunity for the students to interact with such a dynamic personality.
An eminent personality, Debarati Sen was appointed as the Managing Director of 3M India Limited and 3M Lanka Pvt. Ltd. with effect from June 1, 2016. Prior to this role, Ms. Debarati was Director, Corporate Sales Operations for 3M Company leading corporate initiatives critical to growth, sales effectiveness and efficiency. She was also the Director for 3M’s US Atlantic & Pacific Branch Operations (Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam & Alaska).
Ms. Debarati’s career spans over 24 years in Asia and US with over 18 years in 3M in various global, regional and country roles driving marketing, sales and customer engagement, product development, business development, strategy as well as mergers and acquisitions. She also led the global Oil & Gas business for 3M and has also held the position of Vice President of Global Marketing – Equipment Protection Business at Pentair, Inc.
