Jamshedpur, July 2: Trained in the latest technique of farming under the aegis of the District Agriculture Department and ATMA, Chatro villager Dhananjay Mahto, besides cultivating Kharif crops, is into farming of bottle gourd, sweet gourd (nenua), ladies finger and other vegetables. His almost three acre crop field is green round the year and fetches him handsome returns. Dhananjay has encouraged other farmers of his village Chatro and others in his Asanbani Panchayat of Potka Block to follow in his footsteps and they too are reaping rich dividends. Presently four other farmers along with him are cultivating vegetables in 18 acres of land.
The Agriculture and Horticulture Department has provided them with drip irrigation facilities whereby water in droplet form is provided to the roots of the plants to give the entire plantation freshness and quality. This process also conserves water.
Dhananjay Mahto is a registered member of the National Agriculture market (e-Nam). This enables him and his associate farmers to market the vegetable produce directly from their fields with the assistance from the Krishi Utpadan Bazaar Samiti (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) through the state network of All Seasons Farm Fresh that delivers vegetable needs of households at doorsteps. Dhananjay Mahto and his fellow farmers have since June 18 have sold 17 quintals of bottle and sweet gourds, ladies fingers and other vegetables to the agency directly from their fields and received spot payments at fair prices.
It may be mentioned here that All Seasons Farm Fresh is a state level marketing source affiliated to APEDA which in turn is registered with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Government of India, is engaged in purchasing agricultural produce directly from the farmers’ fields and ensures home delivery as per orders.
