In India, the challenge for the longest time has been to get children from socially disadvantaged community to enroll to schools.
With the soon-to-be commissioned Kalinganagar Plant Odisha (KPO), Tata Steel’s through CSR is willing to change the education scenario of Odisha, especially in the backward areas of the State.
The steel conglomerate endeavors to create equal opportunities of quality education through initiatives like scholarships, employability training, building new educational infrastructure, projects to promote primary education, and adult literacy programmes at Kalinganagar.
Some of their key impactful programmes include: 1000 School Project- The company is striving towards improving the quality of education in government schools of Odisha.
With this vision, they have rolled out a ‘1,000 Schools Project’, to be set-up in Jajpur, Keonjhar and Sundergarh districts of Odisha. This vast educational infrastructure project which kick started in the last financial year has targeted 60 schools in the first phase.
MoU with Loyola Educational Society-As part of the endeavor to facilitate quality education for the students of Kalinganagar area in Jajpur district, Tata Steel recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Loyola Educational Society (LES) for setting up a School at Kalinganagar. Tata Steel would spend about Rs 25.5 crore for the infrastructure development of the School.
Scholarships and Coaching as part of Affirmative Action Programmes-Tata Steel’s Affirmative Action programmes endeavours to mainstream disadvantaged and marginalised communities through a structured and planned mechanism. Under its Affirmative Action programme focused attention is provided to the local scheduled tribe and schedule caste population.To facilitate access to quality education, Tata Steel is providing free pre-matric coaching and Jyoti Fellowship to meritorious students from the SC/ST Community.
Model Schools-In order to fulfill the growing demand for education in Odisha, Tata Steel will construct 30 model schools in 30 blocks across the State. This way, quality education infrastructure will be brought to the students in far flung areas of Odisha.
Building Infrastructure-It’s not just educational quality; Tata Steel is also involved in providing the best infrastructure to the children of Odisha. The company has built and facilitated construction of numerous educational institutes, including the prestigious Institute of Mathematics in Bhubaneshwar.
Employability Training-Tata Steel intervenes as an employability enabler by bridging the gap between the demand for and availability of vocational training programmes for youth. These programmes are designed to train them for entry-level positions in the organised sector.
Local students within the age group of 12 to 25 years are getting affordable IT training for three months. On completion of the course candidates will be certified by NIIT. Apart from this, the Centre also provides a 6-month programme on spoken English for different levels of students at a nominal fee, thus, enabling them to meet the needs of industry.
