Jamshedpur, Nov. 6: A Safety campaign on ‘Material Handling & Storage-Be Clear Stay Clear’ was launched by Sanjiv Paul, VP Safety, Health and Sustainability, Tata Steel, R Rabi Prasad, President-TWU, Probal Ghosh, Chief of Mechanical Maintenance and Vilas N. Gaikwad, Chief Safety (India & SEA) at the Steelennium Hall on Tuesday. Other locations like TSK, Raw Materials Division, Bearings Division, Tarapore, Bhushan Steel, joined through Video conferencing.

In the packed Steellennium Hall, more than 500 people from the Senior Management team, Heads/Chiefs, TWU Office bearers, JDC members, employees and contractor workers witnessed the launch function.

In his welcome address Gaikwad stressed on focussing on safe Material Handling & Storage practices and the need to strengthen existing systems, standards, processes and procedures through this campaign involving everyone, where it can be said that we are at zero harm level. The entire supply chain system should be revisited, addressing gaps and revising SOPs accordingly, he emphasised.

In his address on the “Ensafe System”, Amit Kumar Singh spoke on the importance of having a safety incident related repository which would serve as ready referencefor learnings and recommendations from past incidents.According to him, currently we can also access TSE repository and through the enhanced “Ensafe system”, reach out to contract employees. He requested the departments to share every safety alert and communication with contract employees and vendor partners through Mass meetings, Tool box meetings and such other forums.

The Guest of Honour, R Rabi Prasad, President-TWU commended the safety initiatives and earnestly called uponall employees not to take shortcuts and become over confident in any task. “We have come a long way in our safety Excellence journey and the success of “Zero Cyclist” campaign eliminated cyclist related incidents”, he said.

The Chief Guest of the occasion, Sanjiv Paul, emphasized the need to focus on high risk jobs, where the hazards are more, related to material handling, heavy equipment and mobile equipment. The owners of the campaign are all the line managers, supervisors and workers involved in the tasks. During the campaign, contribution and performance will be appreciated, recognized and rewarded. He requested all present to be focussed on Safety-Zero harm as the goal and said that employees will be empowered with information and modernized IT systems to enhance performance.

The other distinguished guest Probal Ghosh, Chief of Mechanical Maintenance informed about the rate of Material Handling incidents, common OFIs like overcrowding at workplace, failure of equipment, tools and tackles. The key to resolving these issues are through strengthening and developing human competency, equipment competency and system competency. “Let us rectify and control unsafe acts and incidents” he said.

During these campaign the first Safety Video of a series titled “Anthim Sans-Episode#1” was also launched. This safety video series essentially focuses on recent safety incidentsat Tata Steel and is being developed for Learning and Training purposes.
This campaign focusses to strengthen and address safety issues related to “Material Handling & Storage”, primarily to reduce or eliminate workplace injuries.
