Jamshedpur: Kancho, Beauty, CJ, Josh and Rider, all Belgian Shepherds from Tata Steel Kennel at Jamshedpur won all four top prizes in the C-6 Class C category of the 8th Obedience Trial Championship organized by the North Kolkata Canine Club yesterday.

While Kancho whose handler is Dhan Bahadur won the first prize, Beauty handled by KK Singh came Second.

CJ handled by Dipak Roshan Bandra came third, while Josh handled by Gopal Bahadur camein at fourth place in a tie with Rider handled by Swami Prasad. K P Banerjee is in-charge of the Kennel.

The C-6 Class C category of championship involves competitive elements of Heel Work, Send Away, Drop and Recall, Retrieve, Distant Control, Sit (two minutes), Down (ten minutes) and scent discrimination.

Speaking about the success of Tata Steel Kennel Club, Gopal Choudhary, Chief Security and Brand Protection, Tata Steel said, “I would like to congratulate the entire Tata Steel Kennel team for this achievement. We have spared no effort in ensuring expert trainingand best-in-class facilities for our canines to emergewinners at all times and we look forward to the approaching season of obedience championships with confidence.”

Tata Steel Kennel currently has a total of 21 canines consisting of trained Belgian and German Shepherds and Labradors as well as pups. Canines from the kennel form the Tata Steel Dog Squad. All Tata Steel Dog Squad canines put in more than 600 plus patrolling hours every year.

The Tata Steel Dog Squad has proved invaluable in protecting assets in sensitive areas of the company and also immensely aided local administration in crime related tracking duty. The canines go through a well modulated twice a day agility and obedience training at the special training ground.

The Tata Steel Kennel came to life at Jamshedpur when it raised a Dog squad in May 1969 by acquiring four pups from the Tata Motors (then Telco) Kennel. Tata Steel established a temporary kennel at 3, Hulang Road, Kaiser Bungalow before a permanent Kennel was built in 1971 on 6 ½ acre plot of land, east of the Jubilee Park.

SK Roy of Bihar Police was the first trainer. While pre-training commences at the age of 2 months, fully trained canines begin regular dog squad tasks from 18 months onwards. The Tata Steel Kennel takes pride in providing best in class training, handling and other facilities for the canines which include a zero tolerance to physical hurt of any sort as well as daily grooming, 24 hr cleanliness procedures, general and specialist veterinary check-ups and scientific diet.
