Jamshedpur, May 31:In a fierce gun battle between security forces and Maoists one security personnel was killed at Rengra Kocha jungle area under Karaikela police station of adjoining West Singhbhum on Sunday. The police jawans were attacked by the ultras while they were on a search operation.

During the encounter SDPO Nathu Singh Meena’s bodyguard Lakhindra Munda was killed.  Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kolhan confirmed the incident.

Apprehending unseen trouble from the rebels, the police was prompted to carry  out long-range patrolling (LRP)  in the rebel-infested pockets. Apart from increasing the co-ordination between the adjoining district police and para-military forces, the police decided to make any strategic movement in the rebel-hit area more cautiously and after sanitization of the area completely.

The police claimed the rebel squad that had triggered indiscriminate firing at the police team, but as the latter retaliated, the armed naxals sneaked into the nearby jungle. The police also claimed to have killed an ultra during the encounter. One villager was also injured in the encounter.

“The combing operation had begun here from wee hours of the day. The security personnel were combing the area in jungle while carrying out the operation.  As the forces were busy in combing operation, they were suddenly sprayed with bullets, leading them to run for the cover. Soon after, the forces had retaliated by returning the fire,” said a police official.

The administration has increased police patrolling on the bordering areas connecting to West Bengal and has also deployed adequate number of paramilitary personnel on areas potential to rebels attack.
