Jamshedpur: A mob of villagers clashed with police in Nachosai village of Potka under Kowali police station area on Saturday while protesting mining activities on a local hill.
After making several abortive attempts to pacify the agitators, police detained 29 villagers including 26 women and took them to Kowali PS. The mining work soon resumed, sources said.
Police officials said the villagers started protest after workers of Leading Construction Company began mining at the hill located near Nachosai. The company is the lease holder over 12 acres of land on the hill. Gram Sabha of Nachosai has reportedly given assent to leasing of the said hill, officials said.
SDO Dhalbhumgarh Chandan Kumar, DSP Mosabani PS Khairwar, Potka CO Dwarika Baitha and the OC of Kowali PS Diwakar Dubey spoke to the villagers and tried to assuage them, but to no avail.
Some women detained by police accused cops of misbehaving with them. The SDO said the Leading Construction Company had got two contracts of road construction. Stone chips are being used by mining the hill for which an MoU has been signed with the government, he said
