Jamshedpur, Aug 11: In a shocking incident, a 43-year-old police head constable was hacked to death by a fellow constable on the Ghatshila sub-jail premises under Dhalbhumgarh police station area on Monday midnight.The murder victim was identified as Dharmendra Kumar Singh.

The assailant identified as Manish Kumar (37) also injured another constable Upendra Kumar Singh who had tried to stop the brawl between the assailant and victim.

Though after the incident, the other policemen had rushed both the victims to the Ghatsila sub-divisional hospital, where the doctors on emergency duty declared the head constable as brought dead.

The injured constable, Upendra Kumar who has sustained grievous injuries was admitted at the sub-divisional hospital and later shifted to MGM Medical College Hospital here in the city on Tuesday morning.

The sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Ghatshila Rajkumar Mehta said that the fight started between the assailant and the head constable over the quality of food being served at the barrack of the Ghatsila sub-jail.

Mehta who interrogated the assailant constable said that first the two engaged in a hot discussion over the quality of food being served at the barrack and later the duo were engaged in an altercation. This led to the death of head constable.

The jail was built in 1980. It has space to hold 170 undertrials, but is home to 220 inmates at present, of whom around 30 are dreaded activists of banned outfit CPI ( Maoist). Though the jail has 12 wards, the condition of two is so poor that the jail authorities have been forced to shut them down, leaving the undertrials stuffed in 10 wards.

Notably, the Ghaghidih Central Jail also lacks adequate security. Jail sources revealed that against a sanctioned strength of 192, the jail has on  71 security personnel. There are no security personnel to man the six watch towers.
