Jamshedpur: Police on Friday arrested a 29-year-old youth who used extort levy from government officials and contractors by impersonating himself a CPI-Maoist rebel at Podahat thana under Sonua thana in West Singhbhum district.
SP, West Singhbhum Kranti Kumar said the arrested person, identified Pankaj Mahto, would give call for Sonua bandh by changing his voice over telephone and later extort money from the government employees, including teachers and also contractors.
The police officials informed that incidents of youths impersonating as rebels are becoming common. Recently too five persons were nabbed on charges of demanding levy impersonating as CPI (Maoist) cadres from the traders in Chakulia police station area.
According to the police a private finance company employee Dinesh Gope, resident of Chakulia, complained to Chakulia police on October 29, 2018 about receiving an anonymous phone call demanding levy following which a four member special team under SDPO, Ghatshila, Ranveer Singh, was constituted to verify the information.
On finding the information to be true the probe team planned and got the miscreants nabbed from Chakulia with the help of the IT cell.
