Jamshedpur: A 37-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling at his residence in No 10 Bustee under Sidhgora police station area. The man identified as Jitendra Mishra was rushed to Tata Main Hospital emergency where he was declared as brought dead. The victim was mentally ill.

The police have recovered the body and sent it to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem. A case has been filed on the basis of a statement made by Rameswar Mishra, the father of the deceased.

According to the relative, the deceased had met a road accident a year ago and had sustained severe head injury.

Sub-inspector Sufal Shasi of Sidhgora police station confirmed it to be a case of suicide. “We are investigating and have found that the deceased was not mentally sound and was internally depressed,” said Shasi who is also the acting officer-in-charge of the Sidhgora police station.

The year 2013 has proved to be testing year for the Steel City with the deteriorating law and order situation along with suicide figures touching 188 mark in 10 months. The city witnessed 200 suicides in 2012 in which about 40 per cent where teenagers.

Mahabir Ram, director, Jeevan, said that Jamshedpur’s high suicide rate is due to increasing urbanisation, industrialisation, migration of people from rural areas and consequent changes in lifestyle. He said that more counselling centres and helplines, and making these part of the public health system can make a difference.
