Jamshedpur : In protest against rising cases of snatching and loot in the area over 100 workers of a construction company staged a gherao of Sonari police station to protest the incidents.

The workers said that they have fallen victim of assault and loot meted to them by the anti-social elements living in nearby slum.

The workers demanded the arrest of those involved in the assault and snatching incidents, but as the police failed to act on the complaint.

The protest started after when one of the workers of the construction company, L&T, Mohammed Arif was manhandled by anti-social elements at Tilu Bhatta bustee in Sonari on Thursday morning. The miscreants attacked Arif, and snatched his money-purse which contained over Rs 2,000.

The agitating workers staged the gherao before submitting a complaint on the fresh incident of snatching. The police said they were trying to nab the culprit but they can catch the accused only after specific details about them is furnished.

“Though such incidents are frequently occurring in various parts of Sonari, the police have not able to control the situation. A majority of snatching incidents have taken place during afternoon and late evening hours when it is difficult to identify snatchers. Snatchers grab the victims from the back and snatch their belongings and escape from the scene within seconds,” said a worker.

Meanwhile a team of Rapid Action Force ( RAF) rushed to the spot getting the complaint of snatching by the local slum dwellers, but by the time the police party arrived at the spot, the criminals had fled the scene.

When contacted, officer-in-charge, Sonari, Sanjiv Kumar confirmed that a group of slum dwellers had allegedly assaulted and snatched away the money purse of a worker belonging to L&T.

“We have increased vigil in the area and have started investigation into the incident. We will be able to arrest the culprits only when we have specific names of those involved in such crimes like snatching and assault,” said the officer-in-charge
