Jamshedpur, April 7: Police are probing on different angles as to what led a 26-year-old youth, Vicky Mahto to jump into a pond at the sight of an approach  patrolling party under Telco police station area on Monday.
Vicky’s body was fished out of the water body following three-hour-long efforts by Tata Motors fire brigade. Though the pond known as C2 Talab falls partially under Birsanagar police station  and partially under Telco police station , a police team led by Birsanagar police station  OC, Sunil Kumar Kushwaha had tried to nab the youth, causing him to jump into the pond.
Vicky got so much frightened of the police party that after taking a plunge into the pond he kept moving in a deeper zone in the waterbody.  Finally, the youth drowned in the deep water.

The incident took place as Vicky was sitting on the brink of the pond’s wall along with his friend Asif Hussain after both of them had come out of their respective homes for buying goods from local shops.

At the sight of the police coming towards him, Asif had managed to run away, but Vicky had jumped into the pond.

Asif who is also a resident of Zone No 5 in Birsanagar like Vickey said : ” I am really shocked to see the behaviour of the police. I had come out of the house for bringing milk, but after I saw Vicky sitting near the pond I stopped and joined him for talk like we would do usually. But after hearing approaching police I promptly stood up and fled the spot, but Vicky jumped into the pond.  After the police party left the spot, I along with another friend Dinesh Kumar tried t locate the victim in the pond, but it was too late.

Vickey was the only hope of the family as his father Shanti Mahto died long ago. The victim would work as a light fitter under a local decorator and would run the family of four, including two sisters and widow mother.
