Jamshedpur, Feb 5: The members of Kurmi community have called for a state wide strike on February 5 against denial of Rajya Sabha ticket to Sudhir Mahato’s widow Savita Mahato.
Peeved over the ‘insult’ meted out by the JMM to Sabita has left the Kurmi community fuming, continuing the protest members of the community took out a torch rally in support of Jharkhand Bandh on Wednesday, February 5.
Torch rally was taken out at Sakchi, Kadma, Uliyan, Sonari, Golmuri and other locations including Gamharia and Seraikela. According to the preparations it is possible that the bandh will be successful.
It may be noted that Sudhir Mahto’s widow Sabita’s candidature was withdrawn for Rajya Sabha Polls and since then it has left the Kurmi community fuming.
As mark of protest city-based Kurmi Sena has called a Jharkhand bandh on February 5 in protest against the denial of Rajya Sabha candidature to Sabita.
The tribal party took a U-turn to withdrawn the candidature of Sabita Mahto for Rajya Sabha.
“It is a matter of shame for us that Sabita has been insulted.
We appeal to the Kurmi community in Jharkhand to come forward and make the bandh a success,” said Kurmi Sena vice-president Ram Prasad Mahto.
Political analysts are of the opinion that the Sabita factor would have a severe impact
on the Mahto votes in the elections.
Kurmis hold the key to the fate of the candidates in the coming Lok Sabha election.
The community, which constitutes 1.5 lakhs in the total population in the Jamshedpur constituency, has always been a potent political group in the State and a swing in its votes is capable of tilting the political balance.
Jugsalai and Bahragora assembly constituencies have the largest concentration of Kurmi votes.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand People’s Party president Surya Singh Besra also said that several tribal
leaders of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha including Champai Soren and Ramdas Soren should not maintain silence over the rejection of party ticket to Sabita Mahato.
He said the two leaders were keeping mum at a time when many in the JMM and outside were opposing the decision taken by the JMM leaders to not give Rajya Sabha ticket to Savita Mahato.
He also sought an explanation from the JMM leaders for ‘kneeling down’ before five MLAs of Rashtriya Janata Dal on the Rajya Sabha ticket issue.
Former JMM parliamentarian from Jamshedpur Shailender Mahto said Shibu Soren and Hemant Soren have hurt the sentiment of the Kurmi community by insulting Sabita.
“I am sure the insult will have an adverse impact on polls in Kolhan as well as Santhal
Pargana region,” he said.
Prominent Kurmi leader Astik Mahto said slain JMM leader Nirmal Mahto, Sudhir’s elder brother played a key role to spread reach of JMM.
The prevailing situation will go a long way in deteriorating the JMM’s influence in the
state,” he added.
