Jamshedpur No Comments on KU students’ union polls witness poor response from students 256

Jamshedpur: The Kolhan University students’ union election that took place on Tuesday amidst heavy rains in the steel city witnessed lukewarm response from the students.

Students across all the 15 constituent colleges voted to choose their leaders. Voting in all the colleges started at 8 am. The voting percentage was very poor in the city except the Jamshedpur Co-operative Law College where it was recorded around 60.67 per cent. The response from the students has been slow.

Voting was peaceful in all the constituent colleges of the city comprising Jamshedpur Cooperative College and Jamshedpur Cooperative Law College in Bistupur, Jamshedpur Workers’ College- Mango, ABM College – Golmuri, Graduate School College for Women- Sakchi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial College- Karandih) and Jamshedpur Women’s College, with no untoward incidents reported. Though activists indulged in protests but still the situation remained peaceful.

When the reports were being filed, the ABM College in Golmuri witnessed 22.5 per cent voting while LBSM College in Karandih witnessed 18. 5 per cent voting. There was only 16.5 per cent voting in Jamshedpur Workers’ College. Candidates at Jamshedpur Women’s College remained uncontested as 19 out of 26 voters were rejected by the college. The Jamshedpur Co-operative College recorded 13.32 per cent voting while the Graduate School College for Women witnessed 9.86 per cent voting.

Voters across 15 colleges of Kolhan including colleges of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan participated in the student election held for the second consecutive year.

“Less numbers of students turn up for voting. In other colleges, it would have been for rains but here in Karandih it was because of lack of awareness. Since the part I and part II examinations took place recently, many students could be told about the election. Out of 4138 voters in the college only 566 voted,” said R.K. Choudhary, a faculty member of LBSM College, Karandih.

Although the voting went smoothly in most of the colleges, activists of Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha (JCM), the students wing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the youth wing of BJP engaged in a brawl at the ABM College only to cause the voting to get delayed by more than an hour. The voting however got over by 2 pm.

The ABVP activists locked the gates in the morning alleging JCM activists for writing slogans on walls inside the college campus. Later, JCM activists who reached the college also alleged the same and engaged in a fist fight. Unruly scenes also took place at the Jamshedpur Workers’ College in Mango as activists of All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) protested against ABVP activists.
