Jamshedpur, March 19 : City-based Jeevan, one of the suicide prevention centres is organising a training workshop to develop volunteers.

Affiliated to Befriender’s India, Chennai, the Bistupur based centre organised a two day volunteer training workshop to enhance their skills that can help victims of depression especially those with suicidal tendencies.

The two resource persons from Lifeline Foundation, Kolkata shared experience about what not to do while dealing with victims of depression.

“Our idea is to enhance the skill of our volunteers to keep them updated about the research in this field. The resource person has over 20 years of experience which was shared with our volunteers,” said Jeo raj Jain, director, Jeevan.

About 27 volunteers attended the two-day workshop that concluded today. The participants learnt about handling a stressed person, identifying their problems and helping by empowering them in decision making.

The two-day workshop also dealt with the Befrienders Charter, which includes the vision, mission and the value statement.

“ We train our Volunteers rigorously in the Techniques of Befriending, often termed as Listening Therapy. This technique is different from the normal thinking and perception of public.

The whole mind-set of volunteer has to change. It is difficult exercise and needs regular practice. We do not advice. We do not say that suicide is bad”. Yet our success rate is almost 100 %. We listen and prompt Caller to ventilate his feelings in confidence. The caller must feel that we are his real empathizers,” said Jain.

In order to improve the quality of befriending, volunteers have to be provided quality training and retraining on continuous basis to hone their skills through Role plays, sharing case-histories etc,. on weekly basis.

The present room in the centre is inadequate to provide proper environment and sitting for existing 30 volunteers. The centre needs a bigger Room with modern training gadgets for conducting such regular programs.
