Jamshedpur, March 22: The response to the Prime Minister’s call for Janata Curfew was absolute. People stayed indoors and the streets were deserted. Some went out due to urgent compulsions. It was indeed a heartwarming sight to see citizens voluntarily cooperating to outsmart the Coronavirus challenge.

The lockdown announced by the Jharkhand government for the entire state commencing today will continue upto March 31 pending further instructions. This is a measure to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus. However, today morning, taking heart from yesterday’s response, it was expected that man and machine will keep off road but what one saw belied sanity. The streets seemed routinely busy with people hurrying about as if the COVID-19 threat had evaporated in a day’s ‘contribution to mankind.’ Some footpath stalls were doing brisk business though thankfully, their tribe was less.

People were laying their hands on whatever they could get in the vegetable markets and general stores. Locality shops too lifted their shutters in an attempt to earn an extra buck of the ‘premium’ variety.

The Deputy Commissioner and the SSP must have got wind of the goings on and they came out to survey the scene that was inviting the corona threat. They urged people to return home and chased away the vendors that remained. From what one gathers, the two officials took the police to task. No sooner said than done may be an adage seemingly appropriate here. Police teams were observed moving urgently in vehicles and getting shops shut.

But the question is, is it the sole responsibility of the administration and police to enforce protection from something more devastating than a nuclear bomb? Whatever happened to the morals of citizens that were so responsibly displayed yesterday? When the government has announced that essential services like groceries, medical assistance, sanitation, vegetables, fuel will be available, then why this unnecessary helter-skelter for getting sick?

Man needs man’s cooperation to stave off a killer threat with sanity in place. Do not go out unless it is absolutely necessary. Think of the folks at home, about yourself and about the world community that is in need of rational thinking and a holistic approach.
