Seraikela: Seven persons died while five got seriously injured in a head-on collision between a pick-up van and a crane on the Rajnagar-Chaibasa route near Khairbani on Wednesday. The injured were taken to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur where their condition was reportedly critical.
Sources said the mishap occurred in the morning when the pick-up van, a Tata Magic, was retrning to Kita village of Rajnagar from the local weekly market. Near Khairbani, a speeding crane coming from the opposition direction rammed into the van. Five women passengers died at the scene after sustaining critical injuries. Two of the passengers died later during treatment. Two men and three women were sent to MGM Hospital.
Irked over the mishap, local residents blocked the Tata-Chaibasa main road for several hours and demanded compensation for the next of kin of the deceased. SDO Sandeep Kumar and DSP headquarters Deepak Kumar reached the accident scene and tried to pacify the agitators. After much effort by police, the agitators agreed to remove the blockade.
Sources said the pick-up van was badly damaged in the accident. The injured suffered multiple fractures and head wounds in the impact, they said.
