Jamshedpur, Jan. 6: In tragic incident a 20-year-old woman died of burns at Tata Main Hospital’s burn care unit on Sunday, the deceased’s parents have alleged their son-in-law to have forced their daughter to commit suicide.

The police are yet to register a case in connection to the incident though the deceased’s parents have already given their statement against the husband at the Tata Main Hospital camp police station.

The victim Sarmistha Dutta who was a mother of a one-and-half-year baby boy had set herself on fire after her husband Babulal Dutta following a serious quarrel at their rented house in Namotola under Parsudih thana area on December 26 morning.

Sarmistha set herself on fire. Though her husband went to save his wife but she was already burnt.

Babulal had subsequently rushed the victim to Tata Main Hospital to be shifted to the burn care unit. She succumbed to her burns early this morning.
Babulal (28) who is also a resident of Nadia district had got married in 2015 and would stay at the rented house.

Her parents Nimai Raha and mother Aduri had come to the steel city having received the news of their daughter getting burnt at her home.

“We are in state of shock. My daughter was married to Babulal three years ago, when we had failed to give him a gold chain and a steel almirah. She came to Jamshedpur her husband would also torture her and assault her. As my daughter was already depressed due to the continuous torture for the dowry, she set herself on fire after a quarrel with her husband on December 26 morning,” said Nimai.

OC, Tata Main Hospital camp police station, assistant sub-inspector, Surendra Sharma said they have received a statement from the victim’s parents and will forward it to the Parsudih police under which jurisdiction the suicide was committed.

“We are investigating the incident Though the deceased’s parents have given their statement against Babulal and held him responsible for death, the accused will be arrested only after a formal complaint is lodged with the Parsudih,” said Sharma.
