Jamshedpur : Governor Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday motivated college students to take active participation in sports activities for overall well being. Addressing the students she said that a university is not only meant for providing academic degrees, it is also focused for holistic development of a human being.

After inaugurating the Chancellor’s Trophy at JRD Tata Complex, she said: “ Sports is a way of life and it prepares students to be mentally strong for the challenges of life. It is rightly said that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body and it also teaches team spirit. Students must take part in sports.”

She also thanked Tata Steel for providing the resources to conduct the sporting events and requested if the corporate giant can extend their help in boosting sportsperson from Kolhan University. University students will participate at the Chancellor’s Trophy in basketball and archery events.

Kolhan University vice chancellor Shukla Mahantysaid “Sports is very essential for personality development and so the university has decided to support its sportsperson in all possible way. We are proud of our students who have performed extremely well in the inter university events”.She thanked Tata Steel for their support in sporting events and also expected colleges to take sporting activities seriously.


Pro vice-chancellor Ranjit Kumar Singh and principals of various colleges and students from various universities were present on the occasion. The Chancellor’s Trophy is an inter-university sports meet to boost sporting talent across universities in Jharkhand. Other universities like the Sidhu-Kanhu Murmu University, Dumka; VinobhaBhave University, Hazaribagh; Ranchi University and Birsa Agricultural University is also organising other sports like kho-kho, football, cricket, badminton, volleyball and hockey.

The two day sports competition will have 115 participants from five universities- VinobaBhave University, Hazaribagh; Ranchi University, Ranchi and DrSyama Prasad Mookerjee University in Ranchi, Ranchi and Kolhan University.

Events will take place at the archery ground and basketball court of the JRD Tata Sports Complex. While archery events took place today, basketball will take place tomorrow morning followed by the prize distribution ceremony at 10 am.
