Jamshedpur: Police arrested five persons for allegedly collecting ‘levy’ from different people in the name of Maoists. They confiscated five mobile phones and SIM cards from their possession.
Those arrested were identified as Manoranjan Hembram, Harish Chandra Patar alias Hagru Patar, Indrajeet Patar, Arvind Mahato and Pintu Mahato.
According to SSP Anoop Birtharay, those arrested have no criminal antecedents, but the traders, doctors and contractors of Chakuliya and adjoining areas had complained of getting phone calls for ‘levy’ from persons claiming to be Maoists.
Most of the victims threatened over phone did not inform the police, he said.
The SSP said a West Bengal native, identified as Vishwajeet, is yet to be arrested in connection with the extortion calls. He said those arrested had spent the extortion amount collected by them in visiting local fair and drinking.
The accused persons had collected Rs 1 lakh from a homoeopathic doctor, Pankaj Mahato, and Rs 80,000 from a teacher of Chakuliya.
