Jamshedpur, June 1: In a novel way to settle family disputes amicably, the police department has decided to come up with Family Counselling Centres. As per the plans, the centers will come in all the police stations of Kolhan. The Director General of Police MN Rao has written to all the SPs of the three districts and directed them to open family counselling centres in their area police station.
The letter said that the police team should settle small cases of family dispute at the centre itself by mediation. This will not only save the family from getting shattered, but will also reduce the rift in the relationship.
“We need to address domestic issues with mutual understanding. The idea is not to let the families indulge in court trials and waste their energy and time,” said a police official.
The Family Counseling Centre will function under the in-charge of the police station concerned or the under-inspector nominated by him. The number of male and female members will remain equal in the counseling centre. An office will be available for the counseling center set up at the police station level in the station premises in which members will sit one day a week and solve the problem. Committee members will not solve the problem outside the police station. The centre will mainly deal with complaints on clashes between families.
“All complaints relating to family quarrels, dowry harassment and domestic violence will be directly referred to the centre. We will provide counselling and help families to resolve their issues amicably,’’ said an official.
The newly appointed SSP M Tamil Vanan Rath has said that the cops will become people friendly, upgrade professional skills and ensure transparency in the conduct.
He has asked the cops to be more accommodative to the complainants who come to the police station to lodge complaints. And, at the same he has asked the policemen particularly the station level officials to be transparent in their conduct to win the faith of the commoners.
“He came up with some important suggestions and asked them to improve on these points. After all we are here to serve the society and it cannot be possible without improving on our part and winning their confidence,”an official said.
