, Jan 8: Road Safety Week is celebrated throughout India under the guidance of the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways from January 1 – 7, 2014. To mark this occasion, Safety and Ergonomics department of Tata Steel organised various activities throughout the week (January 1-7, 2014) to create road safety awareness among the employees.

The activities organised during the week included Announcement through dispatcher, Safety Talk organised in various department and mass meetings, positive re-enforcement on road safety and recognition of safety professionals along with Line managers/UCM representatives throughout the week, Nukkad-Natak at various locations inside Works, on-line intranet quiz on Road Safety for employees, on-the-spot Road Safety quiz and recognition of contractor employees, poster and hazard hunt competition for employees/ contractor employees and campaigns for putting reflective tape on cycle.

During the closing ceremony held today at Steelenium Hall, Vilas N Gaikwad, Chief, Safety & Ergonomics welcomed the guests and made a presentation on week long activities held during the Safety Week.

Mr Gaikwad shared with the audience, a presentation on the statistics of road accidents worldwide and inside Works. Incident based movie ‘Surakshit Jeewan Ki Ore’ (Part 3) on road safety was released. This film is based on the fatality which took place near Pellet Plant last year.

Mr Arun Kumar Mishra, Deputy Chief Factory Inspector, while addressing the gathering talked about the importance of Safety training sessions for employees.

He added that a proper analysis of the accidents would help avert accidents in future and also emphasised putting in place a scientific process of recruitment of drivers, which could involve checking their past records and credentials.

In his address to the gathering, Chief Guest for the occasion, Sunil Bhaskaran, Dy VP Corporate Services, Tata Steel talked about the significant changes that have effected in the area of Safety post association with DuPont, while also prompted the audience to question whether or not enough has been done in this area.

He added that Infrastructure is an issue which needs to be addressed along with the need to inculcate attitudinal and behavioural changes with regards to safety. He remarked that the Union’s involvement in the safety drive is important and supportive.

Shahnawaz Alam, Vice President, Tata Workers Union and Prakash Singh, chief, Raw Material Management, Tata Steel were also present on the occasion.
