Jamshedpur, May 21: The Jharkhand government has loosened restrictions although lockdown 4.0 remains in effect along with Sec 144 and curfew between 7 pm and 7 am. Industrial and construction activities have been allowed to resume along with relaxations in other establishments of activity with the sole purposes of oiling the almost stationary economic wheel and providing people with opportunities to procure other essential goods and services that were hitherto unavailable until May 19.
Hardware stores were allowed to reopen to facilitate availability of construction related requisites. One can understand yesterday’s cyclonic conditions that kept most citizens indoors but Thursday, May 21 was a pleasant day to go out for shopping. Yet, the hardware stores all around the city bore a vacant look with hardly any customer coming in. hardware dealers had opened shops with the expectation of brisk business after a hiatus of almost three months when construction jobs remained dormant. But with the state government’s green signal to the sound of beating hammers and the eager buzz of construction contractors and labourers, nothing of that sort has been felt in the steel city over the two days of relaxation.
Some shops did meager business not worth mentioning and some others did not even open the cash registers and drawers. Most spent time in dusting stock racks to keep themselves engaged.
Others looked out in eagerness to see the flow of customers. Nothing of that sort happened. Although these hardware dealers were permitted to open shop between 7 am and 7 pm, most downed their shutters by 1 pm, dejected by the market response.
