Jamshedpur, Nov. 18: Saurabh Suman Jha is an established name among the cine lovers of Jharkhand and Bihar. Jha who made his directorial debut with the Bhojpuri film Gangster Dulhania has received accolades from all sections of the society specially the youths who saw a full-fledged film from Jamshedpur.

The film has been super hit and is successfully running in Gujarat after the shows ran for about two weeks in multiplexes of Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bihar, Karnataka. The film which released in August 2018 will next be screened in Uttar Pradesh and the director hopes for an upward trend seeing the Bhojpuri loving population of the North Indian state.

“Right from getting a film from an initial idea through to watching it on the big screen all has been done in Jamshedpur. The planning (pre-production), shooting, editing and sharing (post-production) and distribution all have been done in this city and I am happy that we have completed a full circle”, said Saurabh Suman Jha.

Talking to this newspaper, Jha who completed his Mass Communication from Karim City College, said, earlier several films including Udaan, Banana etc were shot in Steel City but all other process were completed in Mumbai.

Gangster Dulhania was shot entirely in Jamshedpur and parts of Ranchi with local production crew and actors and produced by Jamshedpur based Kumar Vivek of GR8 FILMS.

“The film shooting was completed in 23 days and we received good response but we need more support of the local audience as then only the regional cinema can grow. Like South Indian films, Tollywood and Punjabi films have big base. Likewise we need more people from Jharkhand and Bihar to come and watch our regional movies including Santhali and Nagpuri, which will help the industry to grow.

A combination of good storytelling, a receptive audience and strong backing from established names will help regional cinema flourish in Bihar-Jharkhand. Regional cinema has lately been gaining popularity in India and audiences across the country are opening their minds to movies from other parts of the country. The success of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is a great example of a regional movie being accepted by the masses”, added Jha who started his career making short films.

Saurabh Suman Jha gives credit to ‘Shorts’ the annual short film festival of Jamshedpur for his rise in stature. “‘Shorts’ has provided me the platform ever since my first short film ‘Who Am I Don’t Know’ received Jury award in 2010 which helped me turn into a professional filmmaker. Kala Mandir’s Amitav Ghosh also assisted me and through street plays and theatre during my college days were the main ingredients which helped me take up this career.”

When asked about his idol, Jha says, “I am a big fan of Anurag Kashyap’s films. I have seen most of his movies and the best thing about him is that he never stops when it comes to portraying violence in a raw and real manner as most of his films are identified with the raw language. What’s in his mind is visible on the screen”.

He further said that Jharkhand has rich locations and this is the reason several big banner films are being shot in the mineral rich state and the film policy of the state government will surely help the film makers in the long run.

“Government should continue to lend its support but corporate houses should come up and help establish film institutes so that aspiring film makers and actors don’t have to move to the tinsel towns of Mumbai or other metros”, said Jha, adding, “I will continue to keep Jamshedpur my base and focus on directing regional cinema and with several digital platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime etc and social media, film makers today can’t make excuse as different platforms are available to tell their story”.

Like any other director, Saurabh also wants to cast Ranbir Kapoor in his films.
“I dream of working with Ranbir one day; he is the Bollywood heartthrob and has shown his acting prowess with stellar performances”, Jha signed off.
