Jamshedpur: From a nondescript village of Sakchi to a bustling modern cosmopolitan town, Jamshedpur has grown from a population of 10,000 to more than 7 lakh today.
The vision of J N Tata in 1902 was not for the Tata Steel Works but for the township. What he dreamed is now a reality but carrying forward and sustaining it a challenge in this ever changing environment.
Tata Steel has carried the tradition of what has been gained from the society has to go back to the society. Under the able leadership of Mr H M Nerurkar, Jamshedpur has grown many folds and so has the plant.
Mr HM Nerurkar joined Tata Steel on 1st February, 1982 and since then has held various positions including Chief Metallurgist, Sr DM (LD-2 Projects), DGM (Steel & Primary Mills), General Manager (Marketing), Sr GM (Supply Chain), Vice President (Flat Products), Vice President (Kalinganagar Project, Orissa & Technology), and Chief Operating Officer (Steel), till he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Tata Steel Ltd. in November 2007. On 9th of April, 2009, he was appointed as Executive Director on the Board of Tata Steel.
With over 35 years of experience in the steel industry, Mr Nerurkar has taken Tata Steel to newer heights.
Over the years, he has been actively associated with various academic and professional bodies in different capacities. He is member of the Board of Directors of World Steel Association, Belgium and CEDEP, France.
He is also the Vice President of Ferrous Division in the Indian Institute of Metals and President of INSDAG and Chairman of the Research Council at National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. He also has the distinction of being the Chairman of the Board of Governors of XLRI, Jamshedpur. He is also the President of Tata Steel Rural Development Society and Trustee of Tata Steel Sports Foundation.
Despite his demanding schedules, Mr Nerurkar takes out time for causes close to his heart. His association with organizations such as the Indian Cancer Society and Jamshedpur Kennel Club reflects his love for nature and fellow beings.
His smiling face & courage to accept the things he could not do is example of his true spirit & caring nature.
During his illustrious career, Mr Nerurkar has been conferred upon with several prestigious awards such as the‘Tata Gold Medal 2004’, ‘SMS Demag Excellence Award 2002’, Steel 80s Award –1990’, ‘SAIL Gold Medal – 1989’ Visveswaraya Award – 1988’ and ‘NMD Award 1987’, ‘Best CEO Award – 2012 by The Indian Institute of Materials Management,‘Best Corporate Purush by Jamshedpur Citizens Forum, ‘Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) by the Lions Clubs International.
Mr Nerurkar is an executive with multifaceted experience ranging from project execution, manufacturing, Quality Control, Supply Chain and Marketing. He has a natural flair for nurturing innovation, the rare business acumen to identify new growth opportunities and motivational leadership which is unique and beyond compare. A family man at heart, his personal life is governed by strong family values.
Many development initiatives have been undertaken at Jamshedpur during his tenure. He is the man behind the Eastern-Western Corridor, Centenary Mall at Bistupur, many new parks in town, Physiotherapy Centre at LALFIC Sonari, Construction aid to Shastrinagar Kalyan Samiti, Dream of Developing Satellite Township.
Mr Ratan Tata’s dream of International Airport at Jamshedpur is been driven by Mr Nerurkar and once it happens Jamshedpur will develop tremendously both economically and commercially.
Mr Nerurkar will retire on 31 October 2013 but he is handing over the regime to yet another dynamic and young leader, Mr T V Narendran. With new thoughts and fresh approach I Know that Mr Narendran will take Jamshedpur to greater heights. Today India is known for its youth’s power and strength which is now being seen and implemented at Tata Group as well. From Group Chairman to Tata Steel MD, Tata is young and vibrant.
Mr Nerurkar, although we will miss you very much, our good wishes to you Mrs.Surekha Nerurkar & members of the family for prosperous and bright future. But at the same time with love and affection we welcome Mr Narendran and hope to work together for the development of Jamshedpur.
