Jamshedpur, Nov. 11: In a fierce encounter with rebels of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), CRPF and local police seized fire-arms and huge quantity of ammunition beside other materials in West Singhbhum district on Sunday.
The encounter took place at Temna village under Gudri police station area in Manoharpur block in West Singhbhum district at about 3 am.
The encounter continued for about one hour, but in view of heavy firing by the CRPF, the rebels had to run away leaving their arms and ammunition beside other things at Temna village.
During post-encounter operation, the police recovered one double barrel gun, 180 pieces cartridges of AK-47 assault rifle, one magazine having cartridges of 12 bore calibre, 12 mobile phones, a laptop and Rs 735 from the spot.
Revealing about the breakthrough, West Singhbhum superintendent of police, Kranti Kumar said that they had a tip off that a squad of 10-12 PLFI rebels have assembled at Temna hill for committing some violent act at the adjoining Temna village during a whole-night cultural programme there.
“Based on the information, one company of CRPF jawans of 94 battalion accompanied with district police jawans from Manoharpur police station reached the Temna village. As the CRPF and police jawans were searching for the rebels at Temna village and also in the adjoining Temna hill, they were suddenly welcomed with shots being fired by the rebels.After an hour-long firing from both side, the rebels stopped firing, leading them to flee the spot taking advantage of darkness,” the SP, Kumar.
According to the SP, though the rebels have left behind double-barrel gun and other materials, but from the kind of firepower it was evident that they were firing from AK-47 assault rifle.
Notably, PLFI, which is an off-shoot of naxal outfit CPI-Maoist, is active in West Singhbhum district now-a-days.
The police and paramilitary forces have also beefed up the naxal infested areas of West Singhbhum district. Sources informed that the police are frisking commuters in the bordering areas. At some places common people are also being interrogated by police and paramilitary force on suspicion. Forces have been deployed in strategic locations.
“Security has been beefed up in the area and they were keeping strict vigil on movement of the Naxalites. The plan is to keep a tab on the camps being operated by ultras,” said another official.
