Jamshedpur, July 12: Villagers in Guhiapal and Domjudi panchayats under Baharagora block are fighting for existence due to illegal mining of stones in the banks of the Subarnrekha River.

Illegal mining has increased near the river beds in both the panchayats, as mining mafia has defied the order of chief secretary.

The mafias are using JCB machines for mining from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and in the second shift from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. According to sources, the stones are taken to Baharagora and are broken using a crusher machine and subsequently are sent to Odisha during the night.

Earlier, this work was done in the morning, but owing to the formality tours of taskforce, the work is now being done in the night. People have now raised questions about the role of taskforce.

This year there are chances of good rainfall, which is a very good sign for farmers and residents of this region, but this can cause danger to Guhiapal and Domjudi panchayats because illegal mining is in progress in hundreds of acres of land. As a result, the soil in the river banks have become loose and facing rampant erosion.

Thousands of acres of land have entered the river near the Pathari panchayat. If the illegal mining near the river beds is not stopped hundreds of villages in the region will become history in near future. According to sources, the matter was raised at Mukhyamantri Jan Samvad Kendra and a probe has been initiated into the matter.

Sent to Odisha using fake invoices

Illegal stone crushers are being operated near the Baharagora bus stand from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Earlier, it the operations were done in the morning, but with the hyperactivity of the district administration now the work is being done late in the night.

The role of a senior member of a task force is being suspected as white stones are being brought from Baharagora illegally and with fake invoices from Koderma-Hazaribagh area. After crushing, the stones are being sent to Odisha.

According to reports, a case was registered against the issue two years back and a political leader had to spend a year in jail. Currently, the case is pending before the court. The jailed leader after being released on bail has now become the panchayat representative.
