Jamshedpur, March 5: With the announcement of the April-May Lok Sabha election schedule, the model code of conduct has come into effect on Wednesday, the Election Commission has announced.

Announcing a ninephase Lok Sabha poll schedule starting April 7, Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said on Wednesday the code was vital to ensure a level playing field among various contenders for power. The elections will be held over “nine poll days” spread over the two month. Despite the enforcement of the model code of conduct several hoarding and banners and advertising concerning to RJD, Congress, JVM, BJP and other parties were seen displayed at prime locations of the city. With couple of months to go for the election, political parties have started violating the model code of conduct. Several hoardings were seen displayed at Sakchi, Bistupur and Mango on Wednesday, March 5 evening. As the model code of conduct was enforced the party chiefs should have asked the workers to help remove the banner but they were seen hanging late on Wednesday evening. If still the hoardings are not removed the district administration can take up severe action against the parties.

According to Election Commission of India (ECI) Model code of conduct- No political party or candidate shall permit its or his followers to make use of any individual’s land, building, compound wall etc., without his permission for erecting flag-staffs, suspending banners, pasting notices, writing slogans etc. All such hoardings, advertisements etc. on display shall be removed forthwith by the concerned authorities. Further, no advertisements should be issued in the newspapers and other media including electronic media at the cost of public exchequer.

What is the Model Code of Conduct? The Model Code of Conduct for guidance of political parties and candidates is a set of norms which has been evolved with the consensus of political parties who have consented to abide by the principles embodied in the said code and also binds them to respect and observe it in its letter and spirit.
