Brand ambassadors in Jharkhand
Jamshedpur : With 16th Lok Sabha election due any time next year the Election Commission of India (ECI) is taking every possible step to increase voting percentage in the state especially in the urban area.
The office of the state chief electoral officer has decided to rope in ace archer Deepika Kumari and international cricketer Saurabh Tiwary as brand ambassador of ECI in the state.
In order to finalise the proposal State’s deputy chief electoral officer Abhay Kumar Rao on Thursday held a meeting with Farzan Heerjee, chief, guest relations and sports, Tata Steel and informed about the Election Commission of India decision to rope in ace archer Deepika Kumari and international cricketer Saurabh Tiwary as brand ambassador of ECI in the state.
“We are really happy to get associated with the shining star players of Jharkhand. We had earlier approached Deepika Kumari this year about our proposal but she asked us to take approval from Tata Steel.
Tata Steel official responded positively and informed that company’s special committee will take a final call on it. We are confident that things will get finalized soon,” said the state deputy chief electoral officer.
The 19-year-old Arjuna awardee Deepika Kumari joined Tata Archery Academy in 2008 from Ranchi as a promising archer.
She went on to perform in Sub Junior, Junior and Senior National Championships and has won Gold medals. Besides, she also won a Gold medal in World Youth Archery Championship in 2008 and two Gold medals in CWG- 2010 at Delhi in Individual and Team events.
While Saurabh Tiwary who has played ODIs hails from Jamshedpur joined the company as manager in August 2010.
Meanwhile Rao also said that they have identified two more players hailing from the state as brand ambassadors—hockey star Bigan Soy and international cricketer and fast bowler Varun Raymond Aaron.
Bigan Soy from Chaibasa in West Singhbhum district was part of the team that won bronze win against England at the Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 Women in Mönchengladbach, Germany.
While Varun Aaron known played in IPL and represented country in international cricket.
Jharkhand speedster, who is the pick of MRF Foundation, came into the limelight after clocking 153KPH in Vijay Hazare trophy against Gujarat, played completely to the expectations picking up three crucial wickets giving 24 runs against England in the 4th One Day International in Mumbai on October 23 2011.
In build up to his entry into Team India, Varun bagged 10 wickets in three games in the three-day match of the Emerging Players Tournament in the Australia early 2011.
An election commission official said a significant drop in voters was observed in the last elections, especially young voters. “Therefore we have decided to name some brand ambassadors to bring about awareness among youth and women,” he noted.
