Jamshedpur : A 28-year-old woman was killed after being raped near the marine drive under Sonari police station area in the weehours today.

The victim identified as Geeta Gorai was a resident of Nirmal Nagar, Sonari and she was deaf and mute. Her body was lying in a pool of blood. It appeared that the assailant had first raped her and then stoned her to death.

A rag-picker who was passing through the way had spotted the victim’s body first and he conveyed the information to the residents of Nirmal Nagar.

A police party led by officer-in-charge Sanjiv Kumar rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent the body for post-mortem at MGM Medical College and Hospital.

Kumar said that it appeared in the preliminary investigation that the girl was raped before being killed. The rape will however will be confirmed after autopsy report. HE said, ” It is too early to comment. We have sent the body to the MGM Medical College mortuary. Once the rape is confirmed in the autopsy report, we will add the section of rape in the case. But at the time being we are registering a case of murder only against the unknown,” said the officer-in-charge.

One of the relatives of the victim said that Geeta had gone to attend nature’s call , but she did not return.

Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters-II) Jagdish Prasad also visited the place of occurrence and said that the culprits will be caught soon.
