Jamshedpur, July 11: In a fierce encounter, Nirmal Ghosh, 30, a jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed in an encounter with Maoists forest area in Dalapani village under MGM police station of Ghatshila sub-division of East Singhbhum district on Wednesday morning. The encounter started at around 5.30 am.
As the news spread, East Singhbhum SSP Anoop Birtharay along with DIG Kolhan Kuldeep Dwiwedi rushed the spot.

“As per our information CRPF jawans from the 193 battalion in Kesharpur picket in Galudih along with police were undertaking search operation in the Dalapani jungles after information of presence of Maoists who had entered to the densely forested hills from the Dalma sanctuary side. While, the jawans were patrolling the hills there was a shot fire from Maoists. Nirmal Ghosh was killed on the spot after sustaining bullet injury in head,” said an official.

Ghosh who was posted at Kesharpur picket since early 2017 was a resident of Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

“We have information that armed Maoists are with the group led by Akash and Sachin, two dreaded Maoists who operate in the Jharkhand-Bengal border area. The police and CRPF were jointly conducting the combing cum-search operation when the encounter took place leading to a casualty in the form of a CRPF jawan. The police and CRPF are still carrying out the search operation,” said State police spokesperson and ADG operations, R. K Mallick.

“We have increased vigil across the area. The encounter continued for nearly two hours and over 150 rounds of firing were exchanged between the police and the Maoists. As of now we cannot confirm casualty or injury on the Maoist side. The Maoists retreated taking cover of the dense forest and hilly terrain,” said East Singhbhum SSP.+

Meanwhile, the deceased CRPF jawan body was brought in a CRPF helicopter from the site of the encounter to Sonari Airport from where it was taken to CRPF 157 battalion in Adityapur where it was given last respect in presence of IG operations Ashish Batra and IG CRPF Sanjay Lathkar before being sent to Bengal.

The police and paramilitary forces have also beefed up the naxal infested areas of East Singhbhum district. Sources informed that the police are frisking commuters in the bordering areas. At some places common people are also being interrogated by police and paramilitary force on suspicion. Forces have been deployed in strategic locations.

“Security has been beefed up in the area and they were keeping strict vigil on movement of the Naxalites. The plan is to keep a tab on the camps being operated by ultras,” said another official.

CM condoles CRPF jawan’s death, assures help to kin

Ranchi: Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Wednesday condoled the death of CRPF jawan Nirmal Ghosh in an encounter with Naxalites in Ghatsila. In a tweet, he said the people of Jharkhand were with the family members of the deceased. He said the Government of Jharkhand would help the aggrieved family in every possible manner.
