Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum District Congress Committee is going to wage a massive agitation against the decision taken by the state government to sell liquor from August 1. This was announced here on Friday by the district Congress president Vijay Khan during a press conference at Sakchi.
“The state Cabinet has given its nod to the government’s plan to sell liquor. This is absurd as the government is going to sell something prohibited in many parts of the country. In the neighbouring state of Bihar, there is total prohibition on sale and consumption of liquor. But in Jharkhand, the government has decided to go the opposite way by deciding to sell liquor,” said Khan.
The Congress leader said the voice of protest had started emerging from different quarters across the state ever since the news about the state government going to sell liquor transpired. The people of the state can now very well understand the motives of the government led by the BJP, he said.
“The government cannot fool people by repeating slogans on development. How can it explain selling of liquor as something related to the state’s development? Had this been so, even selling of banned narcotic substances would have been a pious thing to do,” said Khan.
Khan said the district Congress would also raise other issues related to workers and women. He said the party workers will gherao the gate of Timken Company on 7th March to oppose exploitation of workers and women.
Among those present during the press conference include Ashok Choudhary, Ramashraya Prasad, Usha Singh and Aparna Guha.
