Jamshedpur: With the soaring mercury, the summer season has started knocking at the door, leading the steel city denizens to seek relief by changing their eating and clothing preferences.

Harrowed by the scorching sun, the citizens have now started making it out early from their houses for the day’s work as the sun is pulsating its heat waves right in the forenoon. The impact of heat is being felt from the beginning of the ongoing week soon after the Holi got over.

“It is going to be atrocious summer this year it seems as the heat is being felt earlier than expected. I had planned to spend a weekend here but now I think I must change my plan to get some relief right away,” said Kaushik Patro, a resident of Bistupur, who came to steel city all the way from Pune where he is studying mechanical engineering.

It is not Kaushik alone who is finding the summer a bit too early. Others too, are feeling the same. Take a walk down the street in the downtown Bistupur and you will find the fruit and vegetable market flooded with summer fruits and vegetables. From kakadi (long green cucumbers), watermelons to papayas, there are a wide variety of fruits available to counter the season’s heat.

“The supply of summer fruits will go up with the demand in the next few days. We hope to sell higher volumes after a couple of weeks when the heat goes further. Generally, fruits like watermelon, papaya, guava are high in demand.

There is also high demand for cucumber in the peak summer season. Keeping this in mind, we are planning to stock these fruits as early as possible to meet the growing demand,” said Munir, a fruit vendor at the Sakchi market.
