Jamshedpur, Sept. 15: Brahamananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital (BNMH), Jamshedpur has achieved 100% success rate in 154 adult heart surgeries during the last 7 months. The milestone was achieved in surgeries that were conducted from 7th February 2017 to 10th September 2017. Of these surgeries 89 were conducted on male heart patients and 65 female patients.
Of the total patients, 82 underwent bypass surgery (CABG), 56 underwent open heart surgery for valvular heart disease, 12 underwent open heart surgery for congenital heart disease and 4 underwent other surgeries. There were 52 high risk patients in terms of advanced stage of disease, with heart failure and other co-morbidity including uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive lung disease and chronic kidney disease.
In this seven-month duration, 65 artificial heart valves were implanted in 54 patients. In 62 patients, bypass surgery was done on beating heart—a new technique in which heart is not stopped during surgery, thus providing an additional benefit to the patients as compared to traditional technique of replacing heart functions with the help of what is known as a heart-lung machine.
Dr. Perwaiz Alam – Senior Cardiac Surgeon said “Five patients were operated on emergency basis to save their lives. Many of these patients came from rural or suburban areas and had not sort treatment as they could not afford it. Theycame to us at an advanced stage or with major complications, which made the surgeries hi-risk in nature”.
“We achieved this milestone because of a highly competent & dedicated cardiac surgical team, including, cardiac anesthesiologist, cardiac intensivist, cardiac ITU nurses, technicians & resident doctors. Availability of advanced technology at the hospital also played an important role,” added Dr. Alam.
In this group of 154 patients, 122 belong to Jharkhand, 20 from West Bengal, 5 from Bihar and 7 from Orissa. 41 patients were operated through BPL scheme of Jharkhand, 18 from ESI scheme and 7 patients through corporate scheme.
