Jamshedpur: It was all about dhol and nagaras outside the Jamshedpur Co-operative College campus where counting was underway. Though JMM supporters erupted in premature celebrations after postal ballot counting showed gatbandhan candidate Champai Soren leading but soon it started changing as the counting moved ahead. The jubilant mood turned sombre after 10 am as BJP’s Bidyut Baran Mahto started edging out his rival on the lead front.

Celebrations sparked out on Thursday across the Steel City as the BJP retained the Jamshedpur parliamentary seat with record numbers of vote.

The mood at the party’s camp near the strong room at Jamshedpur Co-operative College was upbeat soon after counting started at 8 am. Supporters smeared with gulal displayed V-signs as the counting process started.

Enthusiastic party cadres burst crackers amidst the beat of dhol soon after the BJP candidate Bidyut Baran Mahot caught an early lead.

Mahto had gained early lead, which infused enthusiasm among the party workers. Drum players played the victory tune after announcements of each round of counting exercise.

Leaders and supporters of JMM too had constructed makeshifts tent, however, it was the tent of BJP that was brimming with joy with every passing rounds. After the announcements of every round results, it was the BJP camp of supporters that rejoiced in jubilation.

As the day went ahead the supporters of JVM and JMM started vanishing while the crowd swelled at the saffron brigade. By the 12 round the BJP candidate had already taken a lead of more than one lakh.

“From the very first day we were confident of our victory and we feel relieved to see our candidate heading towards an easy win. We are happy that the party has retained the Jamshedpur parliamentary seat. Every party worker had toiled and they deserve to be lauded. Modi’s charismatic personality and his vision of development too favoured our candidate, voters has shown faith in his leadership,” said Dinesh Kumar, president, district BJP.

BJP office was Sakchi was also abuzz with activities since the counting exercise commenced in the morning. After the results were finally announced the party workers came out on the roads and burst crackers and distributed sweets.

BJP flags ruled areas of Jugsalai, Burmamines, Sakchi, Bistupur and Sidhgora with party workers distributing sweets and bursting crackers.

“ It is the victory of our nation. We are more than happy that the party has retained the Jamshedpur seat. The victory of Bidyut indicates that people have faith in BJP. Moreover, Champai was a weak candidate, the voters had no choice but show him the doors,” said Satbir Singh Somu, a senior leader of youth wing of BJP.

On the other hand silence prevailed at the camp of JMM after the defeat. Party leaders were sad with the results.

“I cannot comment as what led to our defeat. Our senior leaders will sit and review the performance of the party in the elections. However, we do accept that Modi factor played an important role,” said a district leader of JMM.

The roads  remained almost deserted while parking slots in markets  also wore the some look. Footfall at business establishments was also affected as poll results kept most people indoors.
