Jamshedpur: Jeevan organized a discussion on ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicides’ on the concluding day of the 19th national conference of Befrienders India.

Jeevan has been rendering yeomen service in the realms of preventing suicide usually arising out of depression. This institution hosted the 19th Convention of Befrienders India and the efforts were effusively lauded by the members who participated in this Convention.

Jeevan’s subject, ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicides’ was discussed threadbare today at the National Convention. The role of the media was an important issue in the topic. While the constantly changing form of media and technology at a brisk pace accounted for stress and depression, simultaneously, the reach of sympathetic response to mental problems was being aided through email, WhatsApp and other forms of electronic communications. The discussion elucidated that the basic tenet of Befriending would not change through the electronic media but the ways of tackling the sensitive issues leading to suicides would have to change.
The second session saw volunteers from Chennai discuss new modes of Befriending through email.

The Chennai, Kolkata and Jamshedpur delegates, in the course of a panel discussion on the ‘Stigma of Suicide’ tried to find answers to delicate and vital questions leading to new methods to be adopted by each centre in the efforts to wipe out the stigma of suicide and suicidal tendencies.

The panel also discussed the relative legal aspects and information was provided on the enactment on new laws on suicide.

The convention felt the need of opening of suicide prevention centres in other cities because the results of services at these centres are highly positive. But, for this the volunteers would have to expand their knowledge and skill. Such volunteers would have to be dedicated to their responsibilities.

All visiting delegates were taken around the attractive locales of the city.
The success of the Convention could be gauged by the aura of satisfaction amidst the participants. Jeevan’s director Dr Jeev Raj Jain, founder director Dr Mahavir Ram, deputy director M Durga Rao, Gurprit Bhatia and all the other active volunteers joined hands to make the Convention a success.
