Jamshedpur, Feb 6: To curb crime rate in Steel city and with an aim to make Jamshedpur safe for the citizens and visitors the administration has intended to install CCTV cameras.

SSP Amol V Homkar, City SP Karthik S., ADM Ajit Shankar, SDO Prem Ranjan, other police officials and district administration officials along with the traders inspected several locations of the city on Thursday where CCTV cameras will be installed.

At first CCTV cameras have been installed at Sakchi Police Station compound and is keeping full track of the ongoing movement in and around the road.

Drawing lessons from Patna police, the East Singhbhum district police have joined hands with a private company to get the leading roads and strategic locations covered with CCTV cameras.

Concerned over the rising crime graph in the city, the district police department has set the ball rolling to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at major traffic points and the market area.

Senior superintendent of police, Amol V Homkar said that the city is going to have as many as 45 such cameras to be installed on the important roads shortly.

” It is our ambitious project and we are hopeful to make it effective. The plan for installation of CCTV cameras is being worked out jointly by a private firm and the district police, and the process of installation of the gadgets is all set to start from February 15.

The camera will not only help in controlling traffic will also help in quick identification of errant riders involved in accidents,” noted a police official,” said Homkar.

Homkar said that the said company will install 45 CCTV camers at the first phase. He stated that the gadgets will be installed atop an overhead bill-boards on the roads and also the important areas so as enable the cameras to cover the overall view of roads of any given place.

Homkar informed that a special team headed by superintendent of police (city) Kartik S has been set up to look into the installation of the CCTV cameras which will be started getting fixed from mid-February.

Homkar, when asked, said that the said company has alread installed 110 CCTV cameras at Patna by signing an agreement with the Patna city police.

According to Kartik, the roads in important localities like Bistupur, Sakchi and Golmuri will be given priority in the first phase of the CCTV camera installation and in the later stage the localities with lesser civic importance will be selected for the same.

The Sakchi square is notorious for traffic snarls, thanks to unruly auto drivers who blatantly flout every rule in the book and often park their vehicles blocking the freeway. Most of these auto drivers often escape penalty by bribing the traffic constable on duty.

Besides, the CCTV camera may also go a long way in tracking perpetrators of crime or vehicles involved in accidents in the area, he pointed the police officer The camera will help in easily identifying people involved in anti-social activities in the area.

The police department will ensure that the large number of CCTV cameras installed to monitor traffic offences is incorporated into the new system.
