Jamshedpur, Jan. 19: Tata Steel organized the concluding ceremony for Road Safety Week 2016 at the Steelennium Hall inside Tata Steel works on Tuesday. The initiative was targeted at Tata Steel employees and its vendor partners. The theme for this year’s road safety week was ‘Road Safety – Time for Action.’

The closing ceremony saw a panel discussion with panelists like Suresh Kumar, VP, Shared Services, chairman Apex Road Rail Safety Sub-Committee, Andrew Page, VP, Safety, Tata Steel, Shahnawaz Alam, VP, Tata Workers Union, and Kanishk Sethia, an external expert in logistic sector.

Speaking on the occasion Kumar said, “When we realize that our life is more important than one minute of time saved, it will be our biggest achievement. We will continue to make improvements in road infrastructure, systems, and mechanisms but when people will realize their responsibility and have a behavior change, half the battle will be won.”

Commenting on human behavior toward safety Page said, “It is always easy to look at others behavior but it is more important to look at one’s own behavior because that’s the easiest to change. We have made great changes in Tata Steel in terms of road safety and safety and if we can influence our people then we can make a big difference in the societies we operate in.”

Sethia spoke about the optimization of logistics, “Optimization is not about the least cost but about making the right choice. It is important to realize that human life is worth more than saving cost.”

“Change is always difficult for people to accept but it is important to communicate the change and tell people that this change will become a part of their behavior and benefit them.” said Alam.

Some of the other activities that were conducted during the road safety week for the employees included positive re enforcement on road and on the spot recognition, hazard hunt competition on the road involving contract partners, identification of deviation on road by “Paidal March” at various locations inside works, special walk by Apex Road Rail Sub-Committee members on VIP roads, nukkad nataks on road safety theme near canteens and other common places, inspection of heavy vehicles at various departments and online Intranet quiz for road safety for employees.
