Jamshedpur, Aug. 11 : In a tragic mishap, a 54-year-old woman was run over by a speeding trailer near the crossing of Anil Sur Path on the Marine Drive under Kadma police station area early this morning. The mishap took place while the victim, Binati Jena, was on a morning walk.
The trailer, which was coming from the Sonari towards Adityapur toll bridge changed its route and jumped a railing after hitting the woman who was walking through the service lane of the marine drive. She died on the spot as she had also sustained fatal head injuries.
As the mishap took place the locals nabbed by passers by and was handed over to the police. The police also seized the trailer.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) SS Sharma said the mishap took place as the trailer was at a very high speed. ” We are investigating the mishap. We have arrested the driver identified as Jitendra Yadav and seized the vehicle. We have also sent body to MGM Medical College mortuary after taking statement of the victim’s husband Jaidev Jena, a resident of Ganesh Vatika in Kadma,” said the ASI.
Jena who worked in a local company said his wife would go for a morning walk on the marine drive regularly at around the same time.
Notably, the 9-Kms-long marine drive has turned accident prone road as there is no regular patrolling and speed limit check. The road being smooth and widened, the vehicles, including car, trucks and even two-wheelers ply at a top speed.
The district transport office figures suggest that the city currently absorbs around 40,000 vehicles, including 25,000 two-wheelers, annually on the streets. And the district traffic police records say 147 people died in 315 road accidents last year.
