Over 150 hospitalized, government orders probe

Jamshedpur, Feb 14: In a suspected mass food poisoning case, 400 students of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Residential School in Chaibasa (West Singhbhum) fell sick after eating food at hostel canteen late Thursday night. The condition of at least 60 students was serious, sources said.
“The students have fallen ill due to food poisoning. Sixty of them are in critical condition. They were admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital this morning. The students are getting prompt treatment,” said Dr Jagannath Hembram of Chaibasa Sadar Hospital.
Civil surgeon, West Singhbhum, Dr Manju Dubey said, “The students were administered saline and antibiotics. Those who were writing exams were also hospitalized. Their condition is better and stable now. We have sent a team to the school for collecting samples of water and food.”
The remaining students were being treated in the school itself, and two medical teams were assisting their treatment at the school. Four hundred students study in the Kasturba Gandhi Girls School.
The Jharkhand Department of Education has ordered an inquiry into the incident. West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Arava Rajkamal visited Chaibasa Sadar Hospital to take stock of the situation. He ordered a probe into the source of food poisoning by a three-member team.
“The health condition of the students is normal now. The team will submit its report in 48 hours,” said the DC.
According to sources, 20-25 female students of class 12th are writing exams. They are being offered online and medicines etc. have also been arranged for them at the examination center itself. It is being told that the girls of Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls School in Sadar Chaibasa have fallen ill due to food poisoning. On hearing the news of the students falling ill, their parents and relatives reached Sadar Hospital.
From 8-9 am, the girls of Kasturba started coming to Sadar Hospital in Chaibasa. At first, arrangements were made for the treatment of girls in the school itself. However, the condition of some girls started deteriorating. He was sent to Sadar Hospital. If about 150 girl students were brought to the 100-bed Sadar Hospital, some would have to be sent to a sub-divisional hospital in Chakradharpur.
Health workers of the Sadar Hospital said that there was a lot of chaos here when so many girls came to the hospital together. The students have told that they were served stale food on Thursday night. After eating the food, suddenly the health of all the girls worsened at midnight. In the morning, 150 girl students were taken for treatment. Seriously ill girl students were admitted to Sadar Hospital.
