Jamshedpur, July 16: In a shocking incident, a 14-year-old boy was found hanging on the temple premises at Bhatia Bustee under Kadma police station area on Wednesday evening. As the news spread, the owner of Chandibaba temple was taken into custody in the wee hours today.

The deceased was identified as Ashu Mahanand, who used to work in the temple-cum-residence of Debu Mukherjee. However, panic spread in the area when he was found hanging at a veranda between the temple and the house in the densely-populated Bhatia Bustee.

The police nabbed Debu, who is also a civil contractor, after the deceased’s kin and hundreds of local residents gathered outside the Chandi Baba Mandir and staged demonstration alleging the incident as murder.

As the news spread, the family members of the deceased rushed to the spot followed by the local residents for the protest which continued from 10 pm on Wednesday till 2 am today.

A police party led by OC, Kadma, Ranjit Kumar resorted to mild lathicharge and subsequently took Debu under custody before removing the body.

“It is too early to comment. However this appeared to be a case of suicide, but as the body was found hanging at the house of Debu Mukherjee who is the owner of the temple, we have detained him.  We are interrogating the man and will formally arrest him if we find him for the suicide of the boy who used to work as a domestic help,” said Kumar.

The OC also said that they would also look into the autopsy report to get it ascertained whether the deceased had been subjected to any torture by Debu.

The deceased’s brother Anuj Mahanand said that his brother used to work at Debu Mukherjee’s temple and house since the past three years as a domestic help.

“We want a thorough investigation. We have come to know that on Tuesday night, Debu and his brother had also assaulted my brother as he wanted to go home.  He must have been tortured and this led to his death,” said Anuj.

Anuj, also said that they suspect it to be a case of murder as when he and his family members rushed to Chandi Baba temple on hearing about Ashu’s death, Debu and other members of his family did not allow them to enter into the premises. He demanded a high level probe into the incident.
