Jamshedpur : In protest the administration’s decision to shift Seraikela sub-divisional office from Seraikela, about 125 lawyers of Seraikela Bar Association went on an indefinite strike from Friday.
According to information, the district administration has shifted the SDO office temporarily at a newly-built Old Age Home at Sahebganj — about seven kms away from Seraikela — as the existing building which accommodates SDO office and court has been declared `unsafe’ by the building construction department.
The lawyers’ group are angry because the Seraikela SDO, Dr Basarat Qayum has shifted his administrative office to the Sahebganj-based Old Age Home, whereas let Sub-divisional magistrate court to function at the SDO building.
Protesting the move, advocate UK Mishra, president of Seraikela Bar Association said the lawyers have been left in risky situation. They should also shift the court, both accommodated at a single building.
“We have decided to remain in strike till our demands are fulfilled.We had requested SDO to shift his office and court to the Old Deputy Commissioner’s office or to Municipality Building or to a tribal-hostel at Rajbandh.
But the SDO did not pay heed to our demand and shifted his office to the newly-built Old Age Home which is about seven kmsaway from Seraikela,” said Mishra.
“We have decided boycott the act of provide legal assistance to the litigants at all level,” advocate Mishra said. The lawyers expressed concern that holding court at an unsafe building is also dangerous and their lives will be at risk.
The existing SDO office building requires maintenance. The Sub-treasury office, located just adjoining the SDO building has already collaposed, leading the building construction department to carry out an inspection of the SDO building six months ago.
SDO, Qayum confirmed to have shifted the administrative section to the Old Age Home today, but said that the lawyers were agreed for the court to be run in the existing SDO building.
