Jamshedpur: About 11 employees and contract workers of Tata Steel sustained serious injuries following an explosion in the LD 2 gas holder inside its Jamshedpur Steel Works on Thursday afternoon.

The injured were rushed to Tata Main Hospital. One of the employees, who received serious head injuries, has been shifted to critical care unit of the hospital.

Soon after the blast at around 3.30 pm there was a panic like situation at the LD 2 unit located inside the Tata Steel plant. The employees and contract workers present at the plant site started running in panic.

A spark in the gas pipeline, around 250 metres from the LD gas holder resulted in a fire but it was controlled due to timely arrival of fire tenders. Six fire tenders took around one hour to douse the flames.

“There was an explosion inside the plant following which fire broke out in the adjoining gas pipeline. Six fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames,” inspector of factories A K Mishra said.

All of the injured were first brought to the emergency ward of the hospital from where a 51-year-old employee identified as B N Sikdar was sent to the Critical Care Unit (CCU). He had sustained head injuries.

Two of the injured were shifted to the medical ward while seven suspected of inhaling industrial gas were kept under observation.

According to officials of Tata Steel, all the vital installations were isolated soon after the explosion and as such production was not affected.

A press communiqué issued by Tata Steel said: “There has been an explosion in one of the gas holders inside the Steel Plant at around 3.30 pm today. The fire has been extinguished and the gas leakage has been arrested.

All vital installations have been isolated and are safe. There is no danger of any gas leakage from the Steel Plant. One person is seriously injured, while 10 person”.
