Seraikela: Police here arrested two persons, identified as Alok Kumar Parihari and Kritivas Sahu, on charges of involvement in the smuggling of emerald on Tuesday.
Cops have seized 748 grams of emerald from the possession of the accused persons. They said the total worth of the seizure could be in several lakhs.
The superintendent of police, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Indrajit Mahatha, said the police had got a tip-off about the culprits. A police team was soon set up to lay hands on the culprits.
The police officials arrested the accused persons after a hot chase near Seraikela when the accused persons were on their way to Kolkata by road in a car, one Scorpio.
Police officials nabbed the culprits who allegedly tried to escape when they were asked to stop at a police barrier on Tata-Kolkata route on the highway.
They took the culprits out of the vehicle and inspected the vehicle. The emerald was found in five packets kept inside.
Police have also seized an electronic weighing machine, a mobile phone, several documents and the vehicle used in smuggling.
They suspect the culprits were bringing the emerald all the way from Ghatsila or Seraikela.
The SP said a search was on to nab other members of the racket dealing in smuggling of valuable stones.
